Application to a master's degree programme
Detailed information on the application can be found in the admission regulations for each master's degree programm. They describe in detail the conditions under which a course of study can be accepted. These regulations can be found on the pages of the individual programmes:
Conditional admission to a master’s degree programme
If you have obtained your Bachelor's degree at a university of applied sciences or abroad, your specialist knowledge will be tested before you begin your Master's degree. It will be compared whether you have the knowledge and skills that are taught in the Bachelor's programs in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Leibniz Universität. The aim is to ensure that all Master students are at the same level of knowledge.
If this is not the case, you will only be admitted to the programme under certain conditions. This means that you will be required to attend certain courses from the Bachelor's programs within the first two semesters and to pass the corresponding exams. Between 1 and 4 different conditions can be imposed. If you do not successfully complete the requirements, you will not be able to obtain the Master's degree. You will not receive credit points for examinations in subjects subject to circulation. The grades are not shown on your diploma. As soon as you have passed one of the circulation examinations, you can pick up a certificate from the respective teacher. You must present this to the Admissions Office.
Most of the additional lecture series and examinations are offered either in the summer semester or in the winter semester, but not in both semesters. If you do not take these examinations in the first or second semester of your master’s degree, you will not be able to complete them by the required date.
Please check the course catalogue in good time.
Entrance test M.Sc. Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
There is a special feature for the Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (M.Sc.) programme: an entrance test is offered before the beginning of each semester. This is aimed at all prospective students who have not completed their Bachelor's degree at Leibniz Universität Hannover (e.g. at a university of applied sciences or at a university abroad). This test checks whether you have the knowledge and skills that are taught in the bachelor’s degree programme (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) in Hannover. If you pass this test, you do not have to expect any conditions. For this reason the participation in the entrance test is highly recommended.
Information for students interested in studying abroad
Language level
Degree programmes in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science take place almost exclusively in German. If you come from abroad and would like to study in Hanover, you should consider carefully whether you have the necessary language skills. In order to successfully complete your studies, you should be able to understand the spoken and written language well and speak fluently. You should also be prepared to continue working to improve your German during your stay.
To apply for a degree programme, you must have reached at least language level B1. At the time of matriculation, language level C1 is required (proven by recognised tests, e.g., DSH 2, TestDaF 4*4 or Telc C1 University). Without knowledge of German, you cannot apply to study at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Provisional enrolment is also not possible.
English-language study option in M. Sc. Computer Science
The Master's degree programme "Computer Science" can be started from 2023 with a German or English language certificate at the language level C1. You will find all important information on this in the following FAQ:
-
What are the requirements regarding the language certificate?
You have to present a language certificate of the German or English language on the language level C1. Accepted language certificates are listed here: https://www.uni-hannover.de/fileadmin/luh/images/fsz/Uebersicht_akzeptierte_Sprachnachweise_an_der_LUH_01.pdf
-
What are the requirements for the Bachelor's degree and is my degree suitable for the subject?
The prerequisite for access to the master's degree programme "Computer Science" is a bachelor's degree in a subject-related previous degree from a university recognized by the German Conference of Ministers of Education (see: http://anabin.kmk.org, search for "institutions").
An admissions committee decides whether the previous degree is subject-specific suitable. You can use the following information to assess your chances of admission in advance.
For the Master's programme in Computer Science, previous studies are required:
- 15 ECTS-LP in Mathematics
- 10 ECTS-LP in Theoretical Computer Science
- 20 ECTS-LP in Computer Science Fundamentals
- 20 ECTS-LP in Advanced Computer Science
You may be admitted with the condition that you make up any missing Bachelor's modules within two semesters. (See: https://www.uni-hannover.de/fileadmin/luh/studium/ordnungen/zugang/master/zo_m_Informatik_Technische_Informatik.pdf)
-
Is the entire study programme designed in English (courses, examinations and other components)?
Access to the study programme is possible with the language level C1 English. So far, rules and information options for students exist mostly in German only (such as the module catalogue or introductory events). A basic knowledge of German is therefore recommended. There are enough modules in English to complete the degree programme. However, the choice is limited in the individual modul groups.
-
The language of instruction during my Bachelor's degree was English and I have a certificate for this from my university. Is this acceptable as proof of English language skills?
No, a certificate from an accepted language exam must be provided. Accepted language certificates are listed here: https://www.llc.uni-hannover.de/en/language-examinations/accepted-language-certificates-at-the-luh
